2012 Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society Calendar

Our professionally produced calendar is now available to purchase through our on-line shop. It uses images from members of the Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society depicting scenes of various lifeboats, lifeboat stations and LARS events throughout the year.

This is a great momento of the Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society’s first year and thoroughly recommended as a great Christmas present.

Great weekend at National Hamfest

The 2011 National Hamfest - a great weekend for the Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society

The Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society attended the recent National Hamfest at the Newark Showground and had a great weekend.

An late start south for our Chairman (Derek, G7LFC) saw him arrive at the show ground a little before midnight on the Thursday evening but his friends from other exhibitors had kindly erected his tent for him earlier in the evening so a good night’s sleep was not an issue.

Up bright and early on the Friday morning (he reckons that he didn’t realise there were two six o’clocks in a day) to set the stand up and the atmosphere was starting to buzz with other exhibitors setting up their stands and doing last-minute pre-show deals.

We ran a Lifeboat Station prize draw during the weekend – visitors to our stand chose their favourite lifeboat station and paid a £1 to enter. Half the money raised was to go to the RNLI and the other half was the prize. We raised £51.50 for the RNLI through the draw, but the winner (Francis Worrall of Tamworth) very kindly donated his winnings to the RNLI and his prize money and other donations added in (including money raised by the Bedford Amateur Radio Society at their recent local rally) brought the total to be donated to the RNLI to over £137.

During the weekend we managed to sign up three new members, to whom we extend a warm welcome, and meet up with the Humber Fortress DX Amateur Radio Club who recently raised £510 for the RNLI during a sponsored operating weekend at Fort Paull – the club’s HQ.

Rebecca (M6BUB) did a great job on the Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society stand - raising over £60

A special mention must be made of Rebecca (M6BUB). Twelve year old Rebecca only obtained her Amateur Radio license in November 2010 but she really joined in with the spirit of the Hamfest and spent a lot of the time on the stand talking to visitors and encouraging them to enter the draw. She was single handedly responsible for raising over £50 on the Saturday which is a great effort for someone so young.

We are extremely grateful to everyone who visited the stand and either took part in the draw, or made a donation. They will all go to help running the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) in due course.

The Lifeboat Amateur Radio Society would like to thank the organisers of the National Hamfest, the Lincoln Shortwave Club, for managing the event so well, making us so welcome and agreeing to let us hold our first Annual General Meeting at the 2012 National Hamfest next year.

You can see more images from the National Hamfest in our 2011 Hamfest Gallery.
